Welcome back to our award nominee corner: From last week’s Rachel Howzell’s AND NOW SHE’S GONE (an L.A. Times Book Prize finalist) to this week’s Edgar and Anthony award nominated Mas Arai mystery by the estimable Naomi Hirahara.
HIROSHIMA BOY marks a journey by Los Angeles gardener Mas Arai, who returns to Japan to bring his best friend’s ashes to a relative. This errand involves him in another death, a teenage boy who had been the same age as Mas when he survived the atomic bomb in 1945.
Also nominated for the Macavity and Anthony awards, the series includes SUMMER OF THE BIG BACHI, GASA-GASA GIRL, SNAKESKIN SHAMISEN, BLOOD HINA, STRAWBERRY YELLOW and SAYONARA SLAM. The prolific Hirahara also writes the Officer Ellie Rush bicycle cop series (Berkley) and is the author of LIFE AFTER MANZANAR (Heyday Books). A graduate of Stanford University, Naomi has also written many books about gardening and Japanese American history and culture and has contributed to several anthologies and collaborative books, including LOS ANGELES NOIR and SANTA CRUZ NOIR. Her first historical mystery CLARK AND DIVISION will be published by Soho Crimes. Keep up with all she’s up to at naomihirahara.com.
Following on the heels of historical romance and Victoria Thompson’s CITY OF SCHEMES, our book giveaways leave behind turn-of-the-century New York for the twists and turns of modern Los Angeles in Rachel Howzell Hall’s AND NOW SHE’S GONE.
Private investigator Grayson Sykes is assigned to find Isabel Lincoln, but it’s an assignment Sykes isn’t too keen on because the woman doesn’t want to be found. The case becomes more complicated and dangerous with every new revelation — and threatens to expose Sykes’ own buried secrets.
AND NOW SHE’S GONE was a finalist in the LA Times’ Book Prize and an Amazon.com Best Books of the Year. Her other riveting novels include LAND OF SHADOWS, SKIES OF ASH, TRAIL OF ECHOES and CITY OF SAVIORS, featuring Los Angeles homicide detective Elouise “Lou” Norton. She’s also the author of another standalone, THEY ALL FALL DOWN, coming to a future giveaway.

We’re on fire with this time around with author Faye Snowden: She is generously offering two hardcovers and five e-books (!) of A KILLING FIRE, a dark, southern gothic tale featuring homicide detective Raven Burns and the first in a four-part series. How hot is it? Just ask bestselling author Jess Lourey, who wrote: “Faye Snowden’s A Killing Fire left me breathless. Driven by a complex, compelling female lead, the story twists with heart-pounding, raw energy against a lush Louisiana backdrop. I couldn’t put it down!”
Snowden’s other novels include SPIRAL OF GUILT, THE SAVIOR and FATAL JUSTICE. Her short story, ONE BULLET, ONE VOTE, was selected as one of the best American mystery and suspense stories of 2021 by editors Steph Cha and Alafair Burke (available for pre-order).
